Celebrate Montréal’s urban agriculture with Fermes en Ville
Montréal is home to 70 urban farms that grow everything from herbs and microgreens to a large variety of vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, and even fish. From September 9 to 13, the Fermes en ville will showcase everything that grows in Montréal, connecting farms and food entrepreneurs, and demonstrating that the urban agriculture industry is an economic, gourmet and supportive of the city's ecological transition.
On the menu of this first edition of the Urban Agriculture Week: a banquet, showcases in a dozen restaurants across the city, a fair, exclusive farm visits, and a foodtruck.
The Banquet – September 9
Esplanade Louvain is a lush green expanse tucked between buildings, where native plants transform the area into an immense urban garden. On September 9, this green oasis will host the Banquet, a feast created by renowned Montréal chef Antonin Mousseau-Rivard and his team. Every ingredient on the menu is sourced from local urban farms, all located within 3km of the table. Diners will enjoy a front row experience to Montréal’s thriving urban agriculture, while directly supporting the community.
Early bird tickets are $149.47 per person, which includes one drink and canapés, access to the banquet, and 2 glasses of wine.
The Showcases – September 11 and 12
Several of the best chefs and restaurants in Montréal are participating in the The Showcases initiative on September 11 and 12 by creating one or more exclusive dishes made from ingredients grown in Montréal’s urban farms. The initiative is presented by La Table Ronde, le Collectif de la gastronomie Québécoise and is the meeting point between Montréal chefs and urban agriculture ingredients. Several collaborations between chefs and producers are also planned for special evenings.
The Fair – 12 September
Tolhurst Park will be the stage for the Fermes en Ville food fair on September 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair will feature tastings of Montréal produce and wines, cooking demos, a talk by Karyne Duplessis-Piché on local spirits, and several producers, all in a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere.
The entry to this event is free with the option to reserve a meal or register to one of the conferences.
Farm Visits
On Sunday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as part of the Portes ouvertes sur les fermes du Québec initiative, sixty province-wide farms will open their doors to the public, including 4 Montréal urban farms. This is a very rare opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in urban agriculture and sustainable food production and explore rarely seen sites such as rooftop farms and social-mission gardens.
In Montréal, visitors can discover the vegetable farm on the rooftop of the Palais des congrès de Montréal, the rooftop vegetable garden at Esplanade Tranquille, La Centrale Agricole, and La Cuisine Collective in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
