Whether their transformative symbolism or their technical complexities, airplanes have enduring appeal. It’s easy to be enamored with the vehicles that take us on vacation! Are you the penultimate #AVgeek? Maybe just a casually interested highflyer? Here are some not-to-be-missed aviation experiences for your Montréal visit.

Bon vol! (Have a good flight!)

YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport

First, some context

Did you know that Montréal is a global centre for aviation? In fact, we’re in the top three cities of aerospace manufacturing. It is the only region in the world where an entire aircraft can be assembled from locally manufactured components. From the blueprints to the paint that goes on the airplanes, we do it all.

According to Aero Montréal, the local aerospace cluster has close to 60,000 workers, including 43,000 in the manufacturing sector alone. Its annual sales total more than $15 billion and 80% of production is exported, making it the largest export sector in Québec.

So, yes, we love planes.

Watch airplanes take off and land

Located near YUL Montreal-Trudeau International Airport, Jacques-de-Lesseps Observatory Park is a prime spot for plane spotting. The park name comes from the pioneering French aviator who was the second person to successfully fly an airplane over the English Channel. At the park, there are bleachers to sit on and benches. It’s a fun mix of families and hard-core aviation buff with binoculars. Safety note: Drones and picnics are not permitted. (Food attracts birds!)

Celebrate civil aviation’s past, present, and future

Located in the main lobby of the International Civil Aviation Organization Headquarters in Montréal, the ICAO Museum showcases the history and achievements of international civil aviation. Visitors can explore different time periods related to ICAO's milestones, including significant legal documents and influential public figures. The current exhibit is called “80 Years of ICAO - A journey through the early decades.” It is open to the public and free of charge.
